Location
Gateway of India - MumbaiThe capital city of the state Maharastra, Mumbai is situated on the edge of Arabian sea.


The City Mumbai
The city of wonder Mumbai earlier known as Bombay is the commercial and business capital of India. This is one of the most modern city of India and world's most populous metropolitan area. In 1661, Mumbai was given as dowry to King Charles when he married Princes Catherine of Portugal. Later during British rule it became a business centre due to its ports. It was also a major centre in Indian Freedom struggle. It was the place where the first meeting of Indian National Congress was held and also it is here that Gandhiji declared Quit India Movement.


Climate
The winter months from November to February are the coolest and the rest of the time is very hot. The city experience heavy rainfall during monsoon(June-September).
Sightseeing
This wonderland Mumbai has numerous tourist places including historic monuments, beaches, temples and some other.
» Gateway of India - This is one of the most visited monument in Mumbai designed by George Wittet. It was built in 1911 and opened to public in 1924. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Marry to India. This beautiful monument has an imposing gateway arch of Indo-Saracenic style. It is also the place where the last British India troops left Independent India by marching through its portals.

» Chowpatty Beach - This is one of the most popular hangout spot in Mumbai. It is always crowded by tourists and local people with a number of vendors, masseurs and roadside restaurants.

Chowpatty Beach - Mumbai» Victoria Terminus - Also known as Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, this magnificent building was built by the British in 1888. It has a statue of Queen Victoria on its dome.

» Prince of Wales Museum - It is one of the finest building constructed during the British rule. The museum was designed by George Wittet to honour the Prince of Wales on his first visit to India. It has a good collection of artefacts, paintings and sculpture belonging to different period of Indian history.


Other Attractions
Other attractions of the city include the Mahalaxmi Temple, Jehangir Art Gallery, Haji Ali Mosque, National Gallery of Modern Art.
Fairs and Festivals
Besides, all the popular festivals of India the people of Mumbai celebrates some unique regional festivals. Some of the major ones are :
» Banganga Festival - Maharastra Tourist Development Corporation(MTDC) organises this festival in the month of January, every year. It is a two-day festival of music held at the Banganga Tank. This attracts classical vocal and instrumental music artists from all parts of the state.

» Elephanta Festival - Held in the month of February this is a festival of dance and music organised by the MTDC. A boat ride from the Gateway of India to the Elephanta Island is also a part of the event.

» Kala Ghoda Festival - It is held on every Sunday during the month of November and January. It is organised by the MTDC at K. Dubash Marg, earlier known as Kala Ghoda. Art, craft, food, handicrafts and cultural performances are the main part of this daylong event.


Shopping
Victoria Terminus - MumbaiThe famous bazaars and markets of Mumbai make it a shoppers paradise. The Chor Bazaar, the Mutton Street, Zaveri Bazaar, Mangaldas Market, Breach Candy and Kemps Corner are Some of the major shopping points of the city. Jewellery, clothes and wooden articles are some of the main items to purchase.
