India Gate, Delhi

Location
President Estate - DelhiThis 42 m high India Gate is located at the eastern end of Rajpath near the Rashtrapati Bhawan(President's House), New Delhi.


Overview
This is a majestic high arch with 42 m height, built in the memory of the 70,000 Indian soldiers, killed in the World War I & the Afghan War of 1919. This offers a good view of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. It is also called All India War Memorial and was designed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens. The foundation stone was laid on 10th February 1921 and was completed in 1931.


Architecture
This beautiful gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens who is also credited of designing the layout plan of New Delhi. The whole structure is built from sandstone and rises to an height of 42 m. The name of the soldiers has engraved on the arch and foundations of the gate. The entire arch stands on a red Bharatpur stone.
Attractions
» The Amar Jawan Jyoti - the flame of the immortal warrior is burning under the gate since 1971 in the memory of the soldiers who laid their lives in the Indo-Pak war.

» Lawns - the green, valvety lawns at India Gate, are a popular evening and holiday spot in New Delhi. Also tourists can enjoy boating in the water bodies along side the lawns.

» Canopy or domed kiosk - There is a beautiful canopy or domed kiosk with a roof of red sandstone is located just a few meters away from the India Gate. The beautiful marble statue of George V was once stood under this domed kiosk. This was also designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Later the statue is removed to the Coronation Memorial Park in North Delhi.

India Gate - DelhiIndia Gate come alive in evening with families, couples and children. The monument looks more striking in evening with the use of special lights.


How to reach
Delhi is connected to several cities in the subcontinent and beyond by air, rail and roadways. Located in the city is a national and international airport, railway junction and many bus terminus. To reach the place one can take any of the mentioned means of transportation.
» Air - Indira Gandhi International airport is connected to all the domestic airports of the country.

» Rail - New Delhi Railway station is the nearest one which is connected to all the major cities of India. The other two main railheads are the Old Delhi and the Hazrat Nizamuddin Rly. station. One can also take metro rail from various parts of Delhi to reach the monument.

» Road - The capital city is connected to all the major cities in and around Delhi by regular bus service. Tourist can take local buses from various points within the city to reach the monument. One can also hire auto-rickshaws and taxis from different parts of the city.
